About my hometown:
Powell River - The Pearl on the Sunshine Coast
Powell River is a great place to live and play, and is a town that I am proud to call home. Having been born and raised here, our family has found that it met all of our needs and at all age groupings. There is plenty of healthy activities for both children and seniors with SPORTS (ranging from soccer, lacrosse, yoga to scuba diving); ARTS (painting, weaving & pottery); and CULTURE (drama theatre, choirs, multitude of musicians, writing workshops etc).
Situated along the Sunshine Coast it has the beauty of good light, (with mainly West or South exposure), incredible ocean views, excellent gardening soil and conditions, numerous large lakes, and a back drop of forests filled with hiking trails.
No highway access has created a very “safe” environment (we joke that it is a natural gated community), and yet traveling to and from Vancouver or Vancouver Island for a day trip is very possible. One thing I have discovered that many people new to Powell River are not aware of is how close we are to Vancouver Island. Located in the downtown core of Powell River is a direct ferry link to Little River (Comox). It is only 1 ¼ hour trip away to Mount Washington Ski Hill, the treasures of Vancouver Island and all of the big box stores you could want.
Air travel is also a viable option, with a 5 flights daily to Vancouver’s South Terminal (www.pacific-coastal.com). It is approximately a ½ flight, plus our local hospital has a lighted helicopter pad, should an emergency occur that our own surgical unit could not support.
With a total population of approximately 20,000; we have enough amenities to meet all needs and wants. From excellent access to grocery chains, drugstores, Walmart, Canadian Tire, lumber yards, banks etc to a state of the art high school, 5 elementary schools, a junior high school, and a college.
Our town boasts an excellent recreation facility with 2 rinks, a performing arts theatre, a large indoor swimming pool and spa, plus numerous playing fields, a track, a curling rink, tennis courts and more.
Having our own hospital and emergency ward, with a surgical and dialyses unit has proven invaluable. Under the Vancouver Health Authority, we also have a local Health Unit, Extended care unit, Nursing Home and Assisted Living units.
There is simply too much to say about my hometown, and ask that you visit the Link page, to other websites, or feel free to contact me for a candid opinion.
